FACE TO FACE

Insect portraits by Thorben Dank ⎮ sagaOptics ⎮ SIX FΞΞT ART

STIFTUNG REINBECKHALLEN //  PROJECT SPACE

August 5th - 12th, 2021, 2 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Face to face with the insect - the macro photographer Thorben Danke exhibits his extraordinary portraits of domestic insects in the Reinbeckhallen Foundation. In the macro shots, the multi-legged protagonists stand directly oppesite us, surprise with their beauty and unexpected color spectra - and in the next moment with incredible, almost alien-like heads and body parts. With the technique of focus stacking, in which up to 300 individual shots are put together to form one photo, Thorben Danke achieved an incredible amount of details and changed our perspective on the insects permanently.

With his pictures he wants to point out the drastic decline in insects and create a completely new way of accessing our fellow beings. Because only what a person knows and understands is he willing to protect and preserve.

Thorben Danke is an insect photographer from southern Germany and discovered the world of insects through photography in 2016. The driving force behind this was his interest in technology and the fascination that comes from the insect world. "Insect extinction is the most extensive species extinction on our planet. We need to understand and protect this foundation of our existence," says the trained electronics engineer. Using the technique of focus stacking, in which hundreds of individual images are combined into one, the multi-legged creatures become extremely magnified and visible in their rich diversity in a whole new way. Together with DJ and nature ambassador Dominik Eulberg, he produced a video for the latter's album "Mannigfaltig," which is intended to raise awareness of the uniqueness of insects.
